Legal nightmares, I was soon to discover, were part of normal life in Syria. Most people seemed to have had direct experience of court cases somehow or other. Throughout the restoration years of Bait Baroudi I had regular meetings with Rashid the lawyer to get bulletins on the progress of my ownership documents through the quagmire of Syrian bureaucracy. We would always meet in the same place – Marwan’s tiny shop – since the house itself was not yet in a fit state to hold meetings.

Inevitably there were times when, because of work and family commitments, I had to be back in England during the interminable process, sometimes receiving text message updates from Rashid in Damascus via Marwan which brought such welcome relief from tedious English paperwork that I wrote them all down verbatim just for the sheer entertainment value of re-reading them whenever my spirits needed lifting.
